A suspect who allegedly assaulted a caregiver barricaded himself in an apartment in San Clemente Monday, triggering evacuations of neighboring residences as deputies attempt to coax him out.
Deputies were called to the 1000 block of Calle de Cerro at 10:13 a.m. to investigate the assault, according to Jaimee Blashaw, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. When deputies arrived, the suspect barricaded himself in the apartment and refused to come out, she said, prompting the evacuation of residents of neighboring apartments.
When SWAT officers could not convince him to come out, they tried to drive him out with tear gas, Blashaw said. When that failed, the officers broke down the door, prompting the suspect to give up about 5:15 p.m., she said.
His name was not immediately released.
