A big rig slammed into a stalled SUV Thursday afternoon on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine, injuring one person who was freed from the wreckage and shutting down a half-dozen traffic lanes, authorities said.
The crash was reported about 2:05 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, just south of Sand Canyon Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The unidentified patient, who suffered moderate trauma, was freed by 2:36 p.m. and taken to a hospital, said Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority.
He did not know which vehicle the victim was in, or that person’s age or gender.
Six northbound lanes of the freeway were blocked at Sand Canyon Avenue following the crash, according to the CHP.
