The pedestrian, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Wessel said. He was crossing the street outside a crosswalk when he was hit.
The driver of the vehicle and witnesses remained at the scene and were assisting in the police investigation, the sergeant said. Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to have been factors in the crash.
Newport Boulevard was closed between 17th and 18th streets until about 5:30 a.m. for the police investigation, Wessel said.
