A man was struck and killed by a vehicle Tuesday while crossing a street in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

The accident was reported about midnight on Newport Boulevard between 17th and 18th streets, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Patrick Wessel.

The pedestrian, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Wessel said. He was crossing the street outside a crosswalk when he was hit.

The driver of the vehicle and witnesses remained at the scene and were assisting in the police investigation, the sergeant said. Neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to have been factors in the crash.
