Four people were hospitalized after a collision on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway Sunday in Costa Mesa involving four vehicles, including one Volkswagen van that overturned and then slammed into the center divider, authorities said.

The crash took place on the southbound 55 Freeway, at Mesa Drive, about 12:55 p.m., an Orange County CHP dispatcher said.

The crash left debris scattered on several southbound lanes, the CHP said. The CHP issued a SigAlert at 1:09 p.m. and temporarily shut down the number one and two southbound lanes.

Four people were transported to hospital for treatment of injuries, the dispatcher said. Their current conditions were unknown.

The CHP cancelled the SigAlert at 3:10 p.m. and all lanes were cleared.
