
Former Assemblyman Tom Umberg extended his lead over state Sen. Janet Nguyen, R-Garden Grove, according to results in the 34th Senate District race released Monday by election officials in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
Umberg, a Democrat, leads Nguyen by 2,523 votes. Umberg leads 50.48 percent-49.52 percent.
Heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, Umberg posted on Twitter that he was “proud to report that our lead increased to 1,862 votes. As we head into this holiday weekend, I want to express how thankful my family and I are to everyone in our community who stood with us. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but for now let’s enjoy the weekend.”
On election night, Umberg trailed Nguyen by 7 percent, or nearly 11,000 votes.
Umberg, a former federal prosecutor and Army veteran, served in the Assembly from 1990-94 and 2004-06.
Other races of note that continued tightening since Election Day include the contests for mayor in Anaheim and Santa Ana.
Attorney Ashleigh Aitken trailed former Councilman Harry Sidhu by 608 votes in Anaheim’s mayor race. Last Monday, she trailed by 1,400 votes.
Sidhu declared victory Nov. 7.
Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido, who has been on the City Council since 1986 and mayor since 1994, had his 904-vote lead last Monday over Councilman Sal Tinajero dip to 757 Monday.
Orange County Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said last week that he expects to finish counting by this Wednesday.
Democratic congressional candidate Gil Cisneros, who has declared victory with Young Kim conceding as well, increased his lead over her in the 39th Congressional District.
According to the latest tallies released by election officials in Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, Cisneros leads by 7,030 votes, or a 51.46 percent to 48.54 percent.
All of Orange County’s congressional seats will be occupied by Democrats, the first time since 1940 when the county had two congressional districts.
Democrat Katie Porter, who has been declared the winner, leads Rep. Mimi Walters, R-Irvine, 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent.
Democrat Harley Rouda leads Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach, 53.5 percent to 46.5 percent.
Fullerton Mayor Doug Chaffee, a Democrat, leads La Habra Mayor Tim Shaw, a Republican, by 1,239 votes, up from 572 votes last Monday, in the nonpartisan race for the Fourth District seat on the Board of Supervisors. Chaffee leads 50.4 percent to 49.5 percent.
