A man in his 50s suffered life-threatening burn injuries Tuesday evening in an explosion and fire in a mobile home in Garden Grove.
The blast was reported about 6:20 p.m. in the 13000 block of Fairview Avenue, according to Capt. Thanh Nguyen, public information officer with the Garden Grove Fire Department.
The injured man, who was found outside the mobile home when crews arrived, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the burn unit at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Nguyen said.
The mobile home was engulfed in flames and it took 27 firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control, according to Nguyen, who said leaking natural gas repeatedly reignited the fire.
It’s unclear if the gas leak caused the fire or resulted from it, he said.
The cause of the blast was under investigation, but “at this time the cause is determined to be accidental, (and investigators are) unable to rule out (a) gas leak from an appliance,” Nguyen said.
One adjacent mobile home in the same facility sustained minor exterior scorch damage, Nguyen said.
