One person was hospitalized Friday morning with a smoke-related injury sustained in a fire in a two-story apartment building in Canoga Park.

Crews responded to the 8500 block of International Avenue, west of Canoga Avenue, at 11:41 p.m. Thursday and found “heavy fire being stoked by Santa Ana winds,” with flames blowing out of the building, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A total of 52 firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. A knockdown was declared at 12:05 a.m. Friday, he said.

Five patients were evaluated at the scene by paramedics for smoke-related injuries and one was taken to a hospital, Prange said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
