The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors declared a state of emergency Saturday in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The declaration was passed during a special meeting.

“IID provides essential services to the community and in proclaiming a local emergency, we can direct staff to take all necessary steps to continue the delivery of those services during this critical period of time,” said IID Board President Norma Sierra Galindo.

The district provides water and electricity to the Imperial Valley and power to the eastern part of the Coachella Valley.

The declaration states that the IID will mobilize its resources and staff to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

IID has pledged not to disconnect electricity to any customers for nonpayment during the outbreak.
