A gas main was breached Thursday on the Soboba Indian Reservation in San Jacinto, causing a leak that prompted the evacuation of several homes.
The rupture was reported about 12:40 p.m. in the 43800 block of Castile Canyon Road, just north of Poppet Flats Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said several engine crews from the county and Soboba tribe reached the location within a few minutes and encountered gas streaming from an underground line.
Firefighters initiated evacuations of several properties, though the exact number of residences impacted was not immediately known.
SoCal Gas Co. technicians were summoned, and by 1:15 p.m., they had begun shutdown procedures on the main, according to reports from the scene.
The cause of the break was under investigation. Repairs were expected to take most of the afternoon.
