A man in a pickup led law enforcement officers on a high-speed pursuit Saturday evening southbound on the San Diego (405) Freeway from the San Fernando Valley to Irvine before he crashed into a center divider.
The pursuit of the man wanted for an assault with a deadly weapon began about 10 p.m., according to broadcast news stations.
Speeds topped 100 mph and officers attempted to back off at times in hopes he would slow dawn, as shown in broadcast video.
About 11 p.m., the pickup slammed into the center divider at Irvine Center Drive, according to an Orange County California Highway Patrol dispatcher.
The man was seen climbing out of the wrecked vehicle with his hands up, then taken into custody.
