Water service was restored and crews were making final repairs Sunday after a water main break flooded approximately 10 to 15 homes in Desert Hot Springs.

The leak occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the area of Crescent Drive and Fifth Street, the Riverside County Fire Department reported.

The main break was caused by neighboring Tamarisk tree roots, flooding nearby roadways and resulting in the relocation of five families to local hotels, the Mission Springs Water District said.

“At no time did the water pressure or water levels drop to a point that would require a boil water advisory,” said Marion Champion, a spokeswoman for the district.

Crews continued to complete backfill, restoration and street cleanup activities in the impacted area while officials worked to determine the full extent of the damages.
