A 26-year-old man was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in Brea who was his friend’s sister.

Eric Romero of Brea was convicted of sexual intercourse or sodomy with a child 10 years or younger, oral copulation or sexual penetration with a child 10 or younger, forcible lewd act on a child, lewd acts with a minor younger than 14, all felonies, as well as two misdemeanor counts of battery.

The victim’s older brother picked her up from school and walked her home like usual Feb. 22, 2016, prosecutors said in a trial brief. Romero, who was a close friend of her brother’s, occasionally stayed with the family, prosecutors said.

When the victim’s brother left to go to his college classes, Romero went into the girl’s mother’s bedroom where she was watching TV and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said.

The mother arrived home from work and interrupted the attack, prosecutors said. The girl’s grandfather was asleep in another part of the house during the attack, according to prosecutors.

Romero is scheduled to be sentenced Nov 17.
