A high-pressure system that drove temperatures upward across the region will linger for a few more days, with forecasters saying Monday that triple-digit heat will continue to impact inland areas for the balance of the week.
The National Weather Service warned of “extreme heat across the mountains and deserts with temperatures between 100 and 110.”
Extreme heat warnings that had been scheduled to expire Sunday night were instead extended through 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Antelope Valley, Antelope Valley Foothills and San Gabriel Mountains, along with the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) freeway corridors.
Forecasters said the Antelope Valley can expect temperatures of 100 to 110 degrees, creating “a high risk for dangerous heat illness, especially for sensitive groups like the very young, the very old, those without air conditioning, and those active outdoors.”
The San Gabriel Mountains could see temperatures of 90 to 105 degrees, according to the NWS.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” forecasters advised.
Forecasters noted that the interior heat could continue into next weekend, meaning the heat warnings could be extended again if the high pressure system remains in place.
Downtown and valley areas are expected to experience “seasonably warm temperatures” for the next few days, according to the NWS, but “additional warming” is anticipated in those areas toward the end of the week as the onshore flow weakens.
“Models are still indicating increasing monsoon moisture starting around Friday and peaking over the weekend, which could add to the heat risk factors and make it feel more sticky and uncomfortable,” according to the NWS.
A cooling trend is anticipated by next Monday, “with temperatures falling to near or even slightly below normal levels.”
Saturday’s high reached 91 degrees in downtown Los Angeles and soared to 100 in Pasadena and Van Nuys and 106 in Lancaster and Palmdale, the NWS reported.
In Orange County, Anaheim reached 90 degrees Saturday and was expected to reach at least 89 on Sunday.
