A gas line punctured Monday by a construction crew in Menifee prompted Riverside County firefighters to request that area residents shelter in place until repairs could be made.

The rupture was reported at 10:15 a.m. in the 27200 block of Newport Road, between Interstate 215 and Bradley Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Several engine crews were sent to the location and discovered the underground gas main had been compromised by workers digging on the grounds. Occupants of multiple residences surrounding the site were notified of the leak and asked to remain indoors as a precaution.

Southern California Gas Co. technicians reached the location about 11:05 a.m. and initiated repairs. The work was expected to take until 2 p.m., according to reports from the scene.
