A brush fire ignited by a burning vehicle just east of Nuevo Friday scorched roughly a half-acre before it was stopped.

The blaze was reported at 11:25 a.m. near the intersection of Hansen Avenue and the Ramona Expressway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Multiple Riverside County Fire Department engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames extending from the four-door sedan into thick vegetation adjacent to the expressway.

The occupants of the vehicle had safely extricated themselves, according to reports from the scene. The car was substantially damaged.

Crews contained the fire in 20 minutes, according to the fire department.

No roads were closed because of the blaze.

Firefighters were expected to remain at the location, mopping up, until about 1 p.m.
