A fiery single-vehicle crash that left one person dead sparked a brushfire along Highway 371 west of Anza Monday.

The crash was reported at 2:08 p.m. on the eastbound side of the two-lane highway near the Cahuilla Creek Casino, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The California Highway Patrol said a red vehicle left the roadway and ended up in a ditch before catching fire.

Several good Samaritans pulled over and attempted to remove the sole occupant from the burning vehicle, the CHP reported.

However, fire officials said a person was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The car fire spread to surrounding brush and burned an acre before its forward spread was halted by firefighters at about 3 p.m.

Authorities shut down the highway’s eastbound lane and CHP officers were conducting one-way traffic control through the westbound lane.
