A fire broke out Wednesday adjacent to the Perris Raceway, briefly threatening mobile homes and other structures before it was stopped.
The non-injury blaze, which blackened roughly an acre, was reported at 1:45 p.m. near the intersection of Cox and Deprad streets, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames approaching a building, prompting them to form a defensive perimeter. Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were also summoned to make runs on the blaze, but the aircraft were only needed for a few minutes. The fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped by 2:10 p.m.
Crews were continuing to harden containment lines and were expected to remain at the raceway until late in the afternoon.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
