A controlled burn got underway Tuesday near Diamond Valley Lake in an effort to eliminate nearly 40 acres of brush.
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, the burn began about 7 a.m. and will conclude at noon east of the area of Domenigoni Parkway and Winchester Road.
Motorists and area residents were advised not to be alarmed by the drift smoke.
The goal of the operation is to eradicate both weeds and non-native grasses, and provide firefighters the opportunity to practice wildland firefighting techniques.
Inmate firefighters from area California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation conservation camps were also on hand.
Prescribed burns are conducted during calm wind days with moderate to high relative humidity, reducing wildfire danger.
Anyone with questions or concerns was asked to call the department’s public affairs bureau at 951-940-6985.
