Two firefighters were injured battling a wildfire that ignited in Thermal Sunday that has burned 20 acres and was now 10% contained.

The wounded firefighters were being evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries, the Riverside County Fire Department said.

The blaze was reported at 12:56 p.m. in the 89000 block of Avenue 76. It was 10% contained by 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Cal Fire Riverside reported.

Sixteen engine companies were responding to the fire with the assistance of Palm Springs, Soboba, Morongo and Cathedral City firefighters.

The National Weather Service said the high in Thermal on Sunday would reach 117 degrees and warned that dry and gusty conditions along the desert slopes, through the passes and into some desert areas would increase fire

danger.

“Near-critical fire weather conditions will develop in these areas for several hours later today into this evening,” the NWS said.
