Road work began Tuesday on a dilapidated roadway in Mecca.
Crews are placing a new layer of pavement along 1.75 miles of Lincoln Street, from Fifth Street to Avenue 62. A new sidewalk will also be installed on the east side of Lincoln Street, between Fifth and Seventh streets.
Work will take an estimated three months to wrap up.
The roadway serves as a crucial artery for the unincorporated community, and has been long in need of repairs, officials said.
Indio-based Granite Construction Co. is doing the construction.
The $3.8 million project is funded by the county’s allocation of state gas tax money.
