Fire broke out Sunday in a riparian area behind the Grove Community Church in Riverside but firefighters limited its spread to half an acre.

The fire was reported at 2:07 p.m. in the interface between the land and a stream at Grove Community and Barton drives, according to Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst.

The fuels were described as light to heavy, Vanderhorst said, and firefighters had difficulty accessing the area.

The flames were out by 4 p.m., he said.

One firefighter suffered a minor medical emergency and was taken to a hospital for treatment, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
