A noxious smell prompted the evacuation of a building in Moreno Valley Friday, leaving nearly a half-dozen people feeling ill, but firefighters were unable to immediately isolate and identify the source.

Crews were called to the warehouse in the 14000 block of Brown Street, just west of Interstate 215, at about 9 a.m. to investigate the odor, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said 130 people were evacuated from the site as a hazardous materials unit initiated an investigation.

Five workers complained of exposure sickness and were taken to hospitals in Moreno Valley and Riverside for further evaluation, according to officials.

Riverside County Department of Environmental Health personnel were summoned to the location to conduct an investigation as well.

At about 10:45 a.m., crews completed their search of the warehouse, without finding a specific source for the fumes, according to reports from the scene.

The investigation was continuing.
