Riverside County reported 679 new cases of COVID-19 and no new virus-related deaths Tuesday, along with an increase in coronavirus hospitalizations.

The number of COVID patients hospitalized in the county increased to 238 Tuesday, up from 214 on Monday, according to the Riverside University Health System. The number of those patients in intensive care was 55, up from 54.

The cumulative number of COVID cases recorded since the pandemic began in March 2020 stood at 376,788, up from 376,109 on Monday.

A total of 5,447 deaths from virus-related complications have been recorded in the county in roughly the past 20 months. The fatalities are trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates and can date back a month or longer.

The number of known active virus cases countywide on Tuesday was 3,969 – – up 356 from Monday, according to the Riverside University Health System. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 376,788 — according to the county’s Executive Office.

Verified patient recoveries countywide were 367,372.
