A 19-year-old man lost control of his sedan and hit several cars before the vehicle overturned and caught fire on a Riverside bridge, fatally injuring his passenger, authorities said Friday.
The fatality occurred about 2:40 p.m. Thursday in the area of Buena Vista Avenue and Indian Hill Road, at the Mission Inn Avenue overcrossing between Riverside and Jurupa Valley, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Sgt. Ryan Taack said the motorist, identified only as a Compton man, was at the wheel of a 2002 Lexus going westbound on Buena Vista with a front seat passenger, whose identity was not disclosed, and suddenly “lost control of the vehicle.”
“The Lexus crossed over into eastbound lanes, where it collided with a 2015 Nissan Sentra, then continued off the roadway, striking a block wall,” Taack said. “The Lexus then overturned and collided with an eastbound 2015 Toyota Camry before catching fire.”
Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Wilson said two engine crews and a truck company reached the location within a couple of minutes, along with a Cal Fire crew, and completely extinguished the flames 30 minutes later.
Paramedics pronounced the Lexus passenger dead at the scene.
The Lexus driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment, along with the driver and passenger of the Toyota, who suffered minor injuries.
The Nissan driver was not hurt, Taack said.
He said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and alcohol and drugs have not been ruled out as possible factors.
