A 21-year-old motorist was killed in a crash involving a sheriff’s patrol car on the north end of Lake Elsinore, authorities said Tuesday.

Christian Bacilio of Menifee was fatally injured at about 1:45 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Lake Crest and Riverside drives, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Circumstances surrounding the death were unclear, but according to the California Highway Patrol, Bacilio’s vehicle and a sheriff’s patrol unit collided.

The CHP does not have jurisdiction where the wreck occurred, but the agency was asked by sheriff’s officials to handle the investigation because a deputy was involved and a neutral party was needed to conduct the inquiry, CHP spokesman Mike Lassig told City News Service.

Preliminary details on the crash were expected to be released later.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Deanna Pecoraro told CNS that the deputy, whose identity was not released, suffered “non-life-threatening injuries.”

“He’s out of the hospital, back home and in good spirits,” Pecoraro said.

She said the lawman was on “routine patrol” when the collision happened, but no other information was provided, with the sergeant referring all inquiries to the CHP.
