A man was struck and killed Monday when he ran in front of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 15 in Wildomar, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatality occurred about 10:40 a.m. on northbound I-15, just south of Wildomar Trail, CHP Officer Mike Lassig said.

He said the man, whose name was not immediately released, was standing on the northbound shoulder for an unknown period of time while traffic passed.

When a 2016 Freightliner truck approached, the man “ran into the right side of the vehicle’s trailer,” which struck the pedestrian, flinging him into the No. 3 lane on the northbound side, Lassig said.

The big rig driver, identified only as a 61-year-old Victorville man, was not hurt and immediately pulled over, according to Lassig.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The No. 2 and 3 northbound lanes were shut down for three hours while a preliminary investigation was conducted. Southbound traffic was not impacted.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP Temecula office at 951-506-2000.
