Barbora Krejcikova has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open due to an elbow injury, leaving the tournament without the world’s top two women’s tennis players, organizers announced Tuesday.

“I am extremely disappointed and sad to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open. I was looking forward to playing in Indian Wells very much but unfortunately I won’t be able to do so this year,” Krejcikova, who is second on the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings, said in a statement.

Krejcikova was to be the tournament’s top seed. As the next player in line to be seeded, Alizé Cornet of France will move into Krejcikova’s spot in the draw.

The Czech hasn’t played since Feb. 23 when she lost to Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, 6-3, 6-2, in a third-round match of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open in Doha, Qatar.

Tournament organizers announced Thursday that Ashleigh Barty, the world’s top-ranked player, had withdrawn. Barty said her body “has not recovered the way I had hoped after the Australian Open,” leaving her unable to prepare for the tournament.

Main draw women’s singles play begins Wednesday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. All 32 seeded players in the 96-player draw receive first-round byes. The seeded players will begin play Friday.
