The Coachella Valley Historical Society will hold a dedication ceremony March 27 for the newly renovated Japanese Memorial Garden at the Coachella Valley History Museum.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and include a Shinto blessing by Rev. Alfred Tsuyuki of the Kondo Church in Los Angeles, who performed the same ceremony during the garden’s original dedication on April 5, 1986.

The ceremony will be followed by entertainment and cultural exhibits through 4 p.m., including a taiko drum performance, origami folding and an ikebana flower demonstration and display.

The garden was created in 1985 as an attempt to preserve the cultural heritage of the Japanese community and recognize the contributions of its early first-generation families who arrived in the Coachella Valley between 1903 and 1929 to establish farms.
