A crash involving a state law enforcement vehicle and another car in Sage Thursday seriously injured a motorist.

The collision occurred about 4:20 p.m. at the intersection of Sage and Trifone roads, just south of the Tucalota Springs RV Park, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A California Department of Fish & Wildlife vehicle and a sedan collided at the location, and the sedan ended up in a ditch, trapping the driver, authorities said.

The circumstances behind the crash were unclear.

Riverside County Fire Department firefighters reached the scene minutes later and freed the trapped victim, who suffered major injuries, according to officials at the scene.

The driver was taken to a hospital by ambulance in serious but stable condition.

The law enforcement officer apparently was not injured.

Sage Road was partially shut down because of the wreck.
