Firefighters Tuesday worked to contain a 50-acre fire that erupted in Mecca.

The Riverside County Fire Department responded to Grant Street and Highway 111 at around 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, where flames were slowly spreading through thick vegetation.

The fire started at one-and-a-half acres and quickly spread to 50 acres by around 1:20 p.m., according to the fire department.

The Bureau of Land Management entered into a unified command with the county fire department.

No injuries or evacuations were reported. The cause of the fire was unknown.
