Monsoonal conditions could return early next week, bringing thunderstorms, especially in Riverside County’s mountain and desert areas, forecasters said Saturday.

The National Weather Service said mountain areas could see thunderstorms as early as Sunday afternoon, with desert slopes and areas west of the mountains possibly seeing rain Monday morning.

The chance of rain in the mountains and deserts could last until next weekend, according to the NWS.

Inland temperatures are expected to peak this weekend before cooling down slightly as the storm system brings cloud coverage and higher humidity next week.

Saturday’s highs will be 96 degrees in Riverside and 107 degrees in Palm Springs, according to the NWS. The highs on Sunday will be 99 degrees in Riverside and 108 degrees in Palm Springs.
