The widely celebrated — and highly visible — July 4th fireworks show at Mt. Rubidoux in Riverside will make a comeback next year following a hiatus that began in 2020.
All fireworks shows in Riverside and throughout most of Riverside County were canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus public health lockdowns, which precipitated a series of haphazard private party pyrotechnics being ignited, resulting in fires.
The city downsized and relocated the Fourth of July fireworks shows in 2021 and 2022, with nothing available at Mt. Rubidoux, where the fireworks can be seen from not only Riverside, but Jurupa Valley, Eastvale, Highgrove, Grand Terrace and all major freeways running through the area.
The Riverside City Council voted 5-2 Tuesday in favor of hosting a show atop the 1,300-foot hill near downtown in 2023. Councilwomen Clarissa Cervantes and Gaby Plascencia cast the no votes, expressing qualms about potential fire hazards.
“For a lot of Riverside families, fireworks off Mt. Rubidoux are a staple of their Independence Day celebration,” Councilman Ronaldo Fierro said. “I am confident our fire department can ensure a safe and enjoyable show for everyone.”
Fireworks shows have been held there for more than five decades.
The City Council approved a $70,000 contract with Rialto-based Pyro Spectaculars Inc. to produce the 2023 show, with options to extend the contract for shows in 2024 and 2025.
Shows will also be held at La Sierra Park and other locations.
