A preliminary hearing is scheduled Friday for a felon accused of shooting at another driver during a road rage confrontation on the Riverside (91) Freeway.

Enrique Campos, 47, of Homeland, is charged with firearm assault, shooting at an occupied vehicle and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a gun in the commission of a felony for the alleged attack in October.

Campos’ preliminary hearing had been set for Wednesday at the Riverside Hall of Justice, but the prosecution and defense requested a two-day delay because of scheduling conflicts, prompting Riverside County Superior Court Judge Charles Koosed to postpone the matter to Friday morning.

The hearing will determine whether there’s sufficient evidence to warrant a trial on the charges filed by the District Attorney’s Office.

Campos is being held in lieu of $200,000 at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside.

He was arrested following an investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

According to the agency, about 11 p.m. Oct. 6, Campos was driving his Kia Soul eastbound on the 91 in Corona when he became enraged with another motorist for unknown reasons.

Officer Javier Navarro said the defendant pulled a handgun and “fired an unknown number of rounds” at the victim, whose identity was not disclosed. The man was not struck by the gunfire.

Navarro said Campos fled, exiting the freeway at McKinley Street.

The victim called 911, and CHP officers initiated a search for the assailant, ultimately confirming the type of sedan he was driving and the license plate — information that was distributed to regional law enforcement agencies, according to Navarro.

He said Chino police officers spotted the vehicle hours later and stopped it on Riverside Drive, where Campos was taken into custody without incident.

He has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County. However, court records show he does have convictions in another jurisdiction, but the offenses weren’t specified.
