A 68-year-old woman who was fatally injured when the motorcycle she was a passenger on overturned on Interstate 10 near Desert Hot Springs was identified by authorities Friday.

Cheryl McCoy of Phoenix was with a 63-year-old man on a green Harley-Davidson motorcycle hauling a small trailer when he made an unsafe turn to the left, lost control and overturned into the center divider, California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer David Torres told City News Service.

McCoy and the driver were knocked off the motorcycle and suffered major injuries, Torres said. They were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where McCoy died at 12:58 p.m. Thursday, according to coroner’s officials.

The motorcycle was going around 70 mph when the solo-vehicle crash occurred around 11:20 a.m. Thursday on westbound Interstate 10 near the Palm Drive exit, according to the CHP and Torres.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected factors in the crash, according to the CHP.

Anyone with additional information on the crash was asked to call CHP Officer Johnson at 760-772-5300.
