A 21-year-old man was fatally injured when his car plowed into a tree and fire hydrant in Lake Elsinore, authorities said Thursday.

Tommy Vaca of Lake Elsinore died about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 14900 block of Amorose Street, near Grand Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Vaca was traveling the residential street when his vehicle went out of control, hitting the tree and hydrant, which was sheared off, causing a sizable water flow, according to the CHP.

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the car.

Eastern Municipal Water District technicians were summoned to turn off the water and repair the hydrant.

It was unknown Thursday whether alcohol or drugs might have been factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
