California Highway Patrol investigators Friday were attempting to sort out why a pedestrian walked onto Interstate 215 in Highgrove, where he was fatally struck by more than one vehicle.
The fatality occurred about 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the northbound side of I-215, just north of Center Street, according to the CHP.
The agency said a man, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, either attempted to cross northbound lanes, or stepped into oncoming traffic for reasons still under investigation.
He was struck in the No. 1 lane by a Kia Optima, then by two to four other vehicles, all of whose drivers stopped, according to the CHP’s preliminary investigation.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene minutes later.
No motorists were injured. However, there were reports of damage to at least one vehicle.
All northbound lanes were shut down for 45 minutes after the impact, with the slow lane reopened first, and all lanes available by 10 p.m.
