A 40-year-old felon from Riverside County on California’s Death Row died after suffering unknown health complications in his cell, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said Friday.

Juan Inzunza of Thousand Palms died Thursday after he was found unconscious in his cell on the condemned inmate unit at San Quentin State Prison in Marin County.

The CDCR said that he was discovered about 9:45 p.m. in his single-person cell, and staff “immediately performed lifesaving measures.”

Inzunza was rushed to a trauma center outside the facility for “a higher level of care,” but the action did not save him. He was pronounced dead at 11:14 p.m., according to the agency.

“Inzunza was housed in a single cell, and there were no obvious signs of trauma,” the CDCR stated. “The death is being investigated by San Quentin’s Investigative Services Unit and the Marin County District Attorney’s Office.”

The inmate was transferred to Death Row in July 2023 following a conviction for first-degree murder with special circumstances after he killed a fellow inmate at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe in 2021.

He had been imprisoned at the east Riverside County facility in May 2018 after his conviction for second-degree murder, for which he was slated to serve a term of life in prison with parole.

That conviction stemmed from the slaying of his roommate, 56-year-old Victoria Supola, who had rented out part of her mobile home to him at 73742 Pacheta Square in Thousand Palms.

Inzunza severely beat and strangled the woman during an unexplained confrontation on June 3, 2014. She managed to crawl halfway outside her trailer to seek help before collapsing. The victim told first responders that Inzunza had attacked her.
