A man was struck and killed by a freight train while standing on Union Pacific railroad tracks in Jurupa Valley, officials confirmed Thursday.
The fatality occurred about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on UP tracks in the largely industrial area around Mission Boulevard and Wineville Road, just north of the Pomona (60) Freeway, according to the railroad.
UP spokeswoman Meg Siffring told City News Service that the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was not at a crossing when the impact happened.
Siffring said that the train crew safely brought the locomotive to a stop afterward. No one on board was injured.
“Union Pacific is working with local authorities to understand what led up to the incident,” she said.
There was no word regarding where the train was headed or what it was carrying.
The tracks were shut down for several hours while a preliminary investigation was conducted.
