An asphalt pavement project spearheaded by the Coachella Valley Water District began in Rancho Mirage Wednesday, shutting down the southbound fast lane near the intersection of Monterey Avenue and Frank Sinatra Drive.

In addition to the closure, left turn movements “may be restricted” on Wednesday and Thursday, Rancho Mirage officials said.

The project is intended to extend a regional non-potable water system into the city to connect to local golf courses, according to a Rancho Mirage Public Works Department statement.

With the project nearing completion, crews are reconstructing the affected lanes.

City officials advised drivers to exercise caution while traveling through the area or use alternate routes, if possible.
