An 81-year-old woman was struck and killed Wednesday while walking along a street in the unincorporated East Hemet area.
Ana De Anda of Hemet was fatally injured just after 7 a.m. Wednesday on Stanford Street, less than a block south of Johnston Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Jonathan Torres said De Anda was walking in traffic lanes for unknown reasons when a Chrysler 300, traveling at an unconfirmed speed, hit her.
The driver, identified only as a 38-year-old Hemet man, immediately stopped.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location minutes later and pronounced De Anda dead at the scene.
The motorist wasn’t hurt and was detained for questioning by sheriff’s deputies and CHP officers. However, he was not arrested.
Torres said alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be factors in the fatality.
An autopsy was pending on the victim.
Anyone with information on the fatality was asked to call the San Gorgonio CHP office at 951-846-5300.
