A photojournalism exhibit highlighting work by Coachella Valley journalists will open next month in Palm Springs, with proceeds supporting a visual journalism internship program, the Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation announced Monday.

The exhibit, Desert Images, is hosted by the Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation in partnership with the city of Palm Springs. It will open May 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Impell Gallery, 610 S. Belardo Road, in the Lofts Art District behind the Sun Center shopping complex. The gallery will remain open for public viewing from 1 to 5 p.m. daily, May 12 through May 16.

“The exhibit is designed to bring public attention to the important role photojournalism plays in helping to tell the community’s story,” Randy Lovely, board president for the Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation, said in a statement.

Organizers said the collection features images of public figures, including Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Jamie Foxx, Nicole Kidman, Donald Trump and Barack Obama, contributed by local outlets such as The Desert Sun, Coachella Valley Independent, Palm Springs Life and El Informador De Valle.

“Funds raised by Desert Images will go toward launching an internship specifically focused on visual journalism,” organizers said.

The internship program will place journalist into local newsrooms for on-the-job training.

Organizers said the images will be available for public sale during the opening and throughout the following week.
