Two people were killed when a big rig collided with multiple vehicles Thursday on Interstate 10 in Cathedral City.

The crash occurred shortly after 6:40 a.m. Thursday when a semi truck traveling westbound on Interstate 10 east of Date Palm Drive drove toward the center divider and over the guard rail into eastbound lanes, according to California Highway Patrol Officer David Torres. It was unclear what triggered the motorist to drive into the wrong lanes.

The vehicle rolled over and an unspecified number of vehicles were hit, which resulted in the temporary closure the eastbound side of the freeway.

An unspecified number of other people suffered injuries of an unknown nature and severity.

A Sigalert was issued shortly after 7 a.m.

Authorities redirected motorists to use the Date Palm Drive freeway exit.

Torres said Nos. 1 and 2 one lanes would be the first lanes to open, later Thursday.

The cause of the crash was under investigation by the CHP.
