Two men were killed when a big rig collided with multiple vehicles Thursday on Interstate 10 in Cathedral City.

The crash occurred shortly after 6:40 a.m. Thursday when a semi truck traveling westbound on Interstate 10 east of Date Palm Drive drove toward the center divider and over the guard rail into eastbound lanes, according to California Highway Patrol David Torres. It was unclear why the semi veered off into the wrong lanes.

The vehicle rolled over and an unspecified number of vehicles were hit, which resulted in the temporary closure the eastbound side of the freeway.

Torres said the two men killed were a driver of a Mercury SUV and a passenger in a Toyota Camry who were ejected from their vehicles.

The identities of the deceased were not revealed pending an investigation.

As of 2:22 p.m. Thursday, all lanes had been reopened, Torres said.

An unspecified number of other people suffered injuries of an unknown nature and severity.

The cause of the crash was under investigation by CHP.
