The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a windblown dust advisory Monday for the Coachella Valley, warning that gusts of up to 50 mph could lead to unhealthy air quality.
The advisory was in effect from 2 p.m. Monday through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday and includes Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage and Indio.
Officials said blowing dust from the gusty winds may push the air quality index from moderate to very unhealthy Monday evening through Tuesday night, particularly in the northwestern part of the valley. Air quality will vary by hour and location depending on wind conditions.
As winds decrease Tuesday morning into the afternoon, air quality is expected to improve to good or moderate levels between 3 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to the agency.
Residents were advised to limit outdoor activity, remain indoors with windows and doors closed, and use air conditioning or an air purifier if impacted by windblown dust or ash.
