A 47-year-old man who was killed when his truck collided with a barrier wall on westbound Interstate 10 in Desert Hot Springs was identified Tuesday.
Alvin Cunningham of Menifee was fatally injured at about 1:45 p.m. Monday at the North Indian Canyon off-ramp, according to the Riverside County coroner’s office.
Cunningham, who was driving a Ford F-550, was traveling at a high rate of speed when the truck crashed into a concrete wall outside the curve that separates the on-ramp and off-ramp, according to Officer David Torres of the California Highway Patrol.
The truck continued through the wall and across a “clover-leaf” type on-ramp to westbound I-10, where it came to a complete stop on a “sloped dirt surface,” Torres said.
The truck caught on fire, and Cunningham was taken out of the vehicle while he was unresponsive. He was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was pronounced dead an hour later by hospital staff.
