Two community leaders have pledged to match up to $25,000 donated over the next 15 days to complete funding for the installation of the “Landmark Pride Flagpole,” Greater Palm Springs Pride announced Monday.
“This flagpole is more than just a structure; it’s a powerful and permanent monument to the activists who have tirelessly fought for equality since the flag was first flown in 1978,” Jasmine Sullivan Waits, executive director of Greater Palm Springs Pride, said in a statement.
Mark Porterfield and Steve Chadima will match funds starting Monday for the flagpole that will be permanently situated at the intersection of Arenas Road and Indian Canyon Drive.
The design will feature Gilbert Baker’s eight-color flag, which officials say is considered the most significant piece of LGBTQ+ art created by the late artist.
“We believe in the welcoming and inclusive spirit of Palm Springs. This flagpole will be a lasting testament to that spirit, and we are proud to offer this challenge to help Greater Palm Springs Pride complete their goal and bring this landmark to life,” Porterfield and Chadima said in a joint statement.
A flag-raising ceremony will take place the week of Oct. 21, organizers said.
