A 32-year-old felon who accidentally shot himself in the hand in Palm Springs was behind bars Wednesday for alleged possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Andrew Patrick Boylan was booked into the Benoit Detention Center in Indio on Monday on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of large-capacity magazines, possession of a short-barreled rifle and negligent discharge of a firearm, according to Capt. Gustavo Araiza of the Palm Springs Police Department.

Officers responded to a call regarding a gunshot victim shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Desert Regional Medical Center.

Boylan told officers that he injured his hand while handling a revolver a friend of his brought to a residence in the 5300 block of Waverly Drive, Araiza said.

At the residence, officers conducted a safety sweep where they found evidence “consistent with a firearm discharge,” police said. In addition, they found ammunition and a rifle case containing a short-barreled AR-15-style rifle along with loaded extended-capacity magazines.

Boylan was arrested Monday after leaving the hospital.
