Roads near the scene of a Union Pacific train derailment in Mecca were reopened Friday, with cleanup work completed.

Nearly 20 rail cars derailed shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Parkside Drive and Highway 111, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. Highway 111 between Bay and Parkside drives was closed while fire crews, law enforcement, a hazardous materials team and county Environmental Health officials responded.

Union Pacific crews also responded for cleanup work.

Fire officials said Thursday evening that “all hazards have been mitigated and no injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported.”

A representative for Union Pacific told City News Service the rail cars were not carrying any hazardous materials. The train carried intermodal containers with mixed freight. The cause of the derailment was not immediately known.

“I can report that the impacted track has been repaired, inspected and reopened to train traffic Friday morning,” a Union Pacific official told CNS Friday.
