The city of Palm Springs will mark Lesbian Visibility Week next week with a series of events highlighting the art, stories and advocacy of lesbians and the broader sapphic community.
Organized in collaboration with the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, the LGBTQ History and Archives of the Desert and Greater Palm Springs Pride, the observance will take place April 20-26 at locations throughout the city.
A flag-raising ceremony will kick off the week’s events at noon Monday at the LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, 1301 N. Palm Canyon Drive. Mayor Naomi Soto is scheduled to issue a proclamation recognizing April 20 as Lesbian Visibility Week in Palm Springs.
Organizers said a featured event will be “Trailblazing Lesbians of the Coachella Valley,” an exhibit highlighting the history and contributions of lesbian, queer women and sapphic community leaders in the region. Honorees include Barbara Carpenter, Gail Christian, Lucy DeBardelaben, Joani Hannan, Marjorie Main and Ruth Debra.
The exhibit will be on display April 21-26 at the Welwood Murray Memorial Library, 100 S. Palm Canyon Drive.
Additional events will include a coffee meetup, a film screening and a wine tasting.
“Residents and visitors are invited to participate in a lineup of cultural and social events designed to honor the past while building a more inclusive, equitable future,” organizers said.
