Palm Springs Pride will attempt to break a Guinness World Record Saturday by assembling hundreds of Marilyn Monroe look-alikes in downtown Palm Springs to honor what would have been the actress’ 100th birthday, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit organization.
The record attempt is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday near the city’s iconic “Forever Marilyn” statue. Organizers are seeking to surpass the current record of 254 people dressed as Monroe and have set a goal of attracting at least 500 participants.
Each participant will receive a costume kit that includes a white halter dress, a platinum blonde wig and a martini glass before taking part in a synchronized group photo. Live entertainment and food will also be featured, and a Guinness World Records certification ceremony is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., organizers said.
The celebration extends beyond the record attempt. The Plaza Theatre, in partnership with the Film Society of Screwball Comedy, is screening films starring Monroe from Friday through Monday. Tickets are available through the Plaza Theatre website: palmspringsplazatheatre.com.
Restaurants and other establishments throughout Palm Springs are also participating in the citywide tribute, organizers said.
